The only thing we probably know for sure at this point is that the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be rather pricey, which won’t exactly make it the most accessible option for mobile gaming. We’ll see on August 11 what Samsung has in store for the next generation of foldable mobile devices, and if I can get my hands on a review unit, I’ll put it through its paces and see if the fold is bold enough to accommodate 2021 gaming. The Z Fold 2 is definitely too large for any of these existing peripherals, which seems to have relegated Z Fold 2 users to clumsy on-screen touch controls. What I am a little worried about is the Z Fold 3 fitting into any kind of physical controller adapter, like Razer’s excellent Kishi, which is an absolute must for xCloud. In a way, the needed support situation is sort of like the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 I just reported on: Until Microsoft and other game developers start accommodating these rather unconventional display shapes, we’re going to be shoehorning the majority of gaming experiences into these niche, specialized viewing situations. I suppose we aren’t in the 32-bit era anymore. It turns out that most modern games just aren’t made to be played squared. Some native Android games look better and fill out most of the internal screen, but even then, it’s old-school 4:3 CRT television vibes. Unless you’re using the slightly conventional outer screen, of course, which has a 25:9 ratio and acts more like a traditional smartphone. That is, despite some obvious caveats.īecause of the Fold’s strange internal aspect ratio (5:4), xCloud apparently streams with significant black bars above and below its gameplay. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to try out the Z Fold 2 when it released, but from the bit of footage I’ve seen across YouTube, the phone seems like a really solid gaming machine.

Speculation places the internal size at around 7.7 inches and the outer screen at 6.2 inches, with an included Note-like S Pen. For instance, I’m really looking forward to seeing how xCloud will run on the Z Fold 3 with its potentially insane screen real estate.
